THE JOY FORMIDABLE
Solus, Cardiff - 21st October 2011
Support: So I Watch You From Afar
I used to love The Joy Formidable. Their early stuff was brilliant, and this tour revolved around their debut full-length 'The Big Roar'. I didn't realise that this was part of the Sŵn Festival, back in the days before it got really popular and some shows were available with stand-alone tickets without having to buy a wristband for the whole shebang.
Solus was Cardiff University's nightclub/small venue. It certainly had nighclub vibes about it, but it wasn't a bad place to see a band. I remember nothing about the opening band, but The Joy Formidable were excellent. Ritzy is an excellent frontwoman, but the whole band were amazing, making more noise than any three-piece has a right to.
I thought The Joy Formidable would be massive. Sadly, that early expectation faded with each subsequent release. They're still going and have a very loyal fanbase, but the excitement has long gone. Whirring remains their best song and it still leaves a huge grin across my face when I hear it.
