The Marisco Tavern, Woolacombe - 8th June 1995

This was a big one. Reef had recently signed an 8 album deal with Sony and starred in a Sony Minidisc TV ad. Their drummer was a local lad, and the Marisco was a nightclub in his hometown, the surfer's paradise that is Woolacombe.
There was a really big crowd eager to see what the fuss was all about. But we had to wait. And wait... the singer had apparently missed his train in London! Eventually, when the band played, they really didn't do it for me. All their songs sounded the same and I just felt the hype wasn't justified.
After I wrote a review in the North Devon Journal to that effect, I was practically banished from the Marisco and my photographer colleague who was mates with Dom let me know the band wasn't happy either. Honesty, it seems, is never welcome.
