CHINA DRUM
The Burston Inn, Bow (nr. Crediton) - 13th April 1995
Support: Naked i

Taken from a review I wrote for the North Devon Journal, published 20th April 1995:

A rather alcohol-fuelled Easter began at the Burston Inn, Bow, a venue renowned for its rave events rather than gigs. Visiting from up Newcastle way were China Drum, recently seen on tour with the mighty Green Day.

And what a welcome they had... no locals turned up, and the 30-odd who travelled from North Devon looked dead!

Electric Orange got a few off their bums and moving about, but China Drum got so fed up with the non-reaction that they ended up just taking the Michael. After playing half-a-dozen or so songs of their own, they decided to give up and mess about. After a version of Guns Of Brixton, they let rip with versions of the themes to Cheggars Plays Pop and Rupert The Bear, Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights and a silly terrace chant tribute to some geezer called Andy Cole.

In short, China Drum were rather excellent (in attitude as well as their music), and I was told in no uncertain terms by one or two people that others in the crowd thought so too. Shame no one could show it!
