HAZEL O'CONNOR
Landmark Theatre, Ilfracombe - date unknown 1994
Support: ???
I remember Brian, one of the photgraphers at the North Devon Journal, where I was working at the time, asking if I fancied this one. He would sort press passes and try and get us backastage. He was a fan, you see. Of course, "yes" was the only obvious answer!
By the 90s, Hazel has moved on from her punk/post-punk roots and into a more folk-driven direction. But while there was a number of her more up-to-date tracks, she also found plenty of room for those classics we loved when she was at her peak. Eighth Day, D-Days, Hanging Around, Will You... all present and correct.
So my only gig in Ilfracombe (that I can recall) was actually a bit of a good one. We did get backstage and meet Hazel (can't remember if it was before or after the show) and she was very accommodating, even posing for photos with us (years before phone selfies!), but sadly I can't find my pics now.
There's so little live footage of Hazel online, and nothing at all from the 90s, at least nothing I could find. So instead, here's some early Hazel in top form.
