POP WILL EAT ITSELF
Great Hall, Exeter University - 27th Ocotber 1992
I can't really explain it, but around this period I seemed to be less and less impressed at every gig I attended. Maybe I'd been spoilt before and I was trying to compare every gig with Public Enemy at Reading or Primal Scream at Glastonbury. Maybe I was expecting a serious "WOW!" moment each time. That was never going to happen, of course. Or maybe I was just going to too many gigs and was getting a bit tired.
Whatever the actual reason, I recall not being overly impressed with the Poppies. I went with a bunch of others who thought they were great, so it was just me.
My overriding memory of this night was not the show itself, but the journey home. Without going into too much detail - we took two van-loads down. I drove my camper and another of our party drove his. After the show, we decided to stop off in the city centre to get some food from a takeaway. However, the other van got pulled over and the driver arrested for being over the alcohol limit. This resulted in all his passengers cramming into my van in order to get home. My vintage camper van wasn't the most powerful of machines at the best of times, but ferrying 10 people the 30+ miles home, which included a long, fairly steep hill at the end of it, was really testing its limits! I think we made it up the hill in first gear!
