MASS OF THE FERMENTING DREGS
Clwb Ifor Bach - 13th October 2025
Support: Enabling Behaviour, Vain
I can't pretend I've known about Mass Of The Fermenting Dregs since their inception in Kobe, Japan in 2002, or since their first release in 2008. In fact, it wasn't until last year their name came up and I was intrigued. I thought they'd be a heaving accumulation of doom metal chords, de-tuned bass rumbles and drums that sound like atomic bombs going off in your living room. I was so wrong.
Now, I'm fully aware that just because I've never heard of a band before, it doesn't mean no one else has. But I didn't expect a big crowd at Clwb for this one. Another thing I was wrong about. We arrived during the second support band and the place was already rammed. MrsRobster and I were, though, among the oldest 10% of the audience. The vast majority of the crowd were younger than our own daughters, which was quite depressing.
The place really went off when MotFD took to the stage. Their supercharged Japanese take on shoegaze-meets-alt-rock was greeted with furious glee from the moment the first note was played. The youthful audience sang back every word, or at least every sound as I doubt most of them can speak Japanese...
For me, the highlight was 1960, a swirling 9-minute instrumental psych masterpiece from their most recent album 'Awakening:Sleeping'. It sounded incredible.
They finished with Delusionalism, the first track I ever heard by them. It seemed a suitable way to say farewell.
And here's the first video I've ever posted that was shot in the Philippines!
