THE DUKE SPIRIT
Strange Brew, Bristol - 29th September 2025
Support: Scrounge
Would you belive me if I said we only went to this gig for the support band? 'Tis true though. MrsRobster became a big fan of Scrounge when we saw them supporting Big Special at the same venue the previous year. They don't seem to play many gigs, at least not near to us, so when she saw this one mentioned on their Insta, she insisted we went.
They were brilliant, of course, and made a lot of new friends on the night, playing a number of songs from their latest album. I wore the t-shirt I bought the last time we saw them. On exiting the Gents, drummer Luke spotted it and said "nice t-shirt". Later on, singer/guitarist Lucy clocked me, pointed and hollered "BIG SPECIAL!" So they clearly appreciated my dress sense!
The Duke Spirit are a band who completely passed me by, despite releasing a hugely-acclaimed debut album back in 2005. This being said album's 20th anniversary, they played the whole thing start to finish before chucking in a few other fan faves at the end. I knew none of the songs, but performance-wise they were tight, and the sound was good. I did feel they got a little samey though. I was in the minority, I reckon. The place was packed and there was a lot of love for the band in there.
