GIG ARCHIVE: #186 - Our Girl 07/12/2024

OUR GIRL
Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff - 7th December 2024
Support: Wyldest, Joe Wilkins

A late decision was made, prompted by MrsRobster. Yes, we will book tickets for Our Girl. Our reticence was prompted by the fact we'd already been to lots of gigs this year, and still had a couple more lined up. Could we justify yet another night out? Dunno why we questioned it really. We can do what the fuck we want in that regard. Turned out it was a great decision, no matter how late it was.

We arrived in the teeny-weeny downstairs bar at Clwb after opening act Joe Wilkins had played. There wasn't a big crowd present, which was a shame, because those who stayed away missed one of the best support acts we'd seen in some time. Wyldest is the name used by London-based singer-songwriter Zoƫ Mead. I'd never come across her before, despite her being three albums in, but she and her band quite frankly blew MrsRobster and I away. Most of her set consisted of songs from her most recent album 'Feed The Flowers Nightmares', which made me more than happy to grab a copy of from the merch stand. If I'm being totally honest, I preferred the live sound of the tracks to the ones on the record, they were just a bit more organic, but Wyldest is still someone to keep your eye on.

In case you didn't know, Our Girl is 'the other band' of The Big Moon's guitarist Soph Nathan. They make understated melodic songs, wrapped up in shoegazy guitars. Or something like that. Anyway, their second album 'The Good Kind' had been in heavy rotation in the car over the previous few months, and the set centred around those songs. The title track, What You Told Me and the amazing Something About Me Being A Woman were undoubted highlights, but earlier songs In My Head and the eponymous Our Girl shone just as bright.

Sometimes you get more than you expect from a show and this was no exception. A disappointingly small audience got a real treat. And maybe that's how it should be.

There's a real lack of decent live footage from the 2024 tour, this was the best I could find, but these clips don't really do either band justice, truth be told.
