GIG ARCHIVE: #173 - Bodega 05/09/2023

BODEGA
Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff - 5th September 2023
Support: Holiday Ghosts, The Outlines

This one goes down as the most rammed gig I've ever attended at Clwb. By the time we arrived (which admittedly wasn't particularly early), we could barely get into the performance area. While that's happened once or twice before, there was some room to manoeuvre to try and get a better view. Not this time though - we were rooted towards the back. We're not the sort of people to barge our way past people to get into the space they were in, though there were, inevitably, a few of them!

We didn't see the opening band, but we did get there part way through Holiday Ghosts' set. Sadly I don't remember anything about it now.

I expected big things from Bodega. They were still touring on their second album 'Broken Equipment' which was my favourite album of 2022 (and MrsRobster's too). And live, those songs did sound terrific. A shame I could barely see them for all the people in front of me who were, of course, taller than I. The band has so much energy in their sound, it must have been evident on stage too. I guess I'll have to assume they were.

My other complaint was the length of their set. They played for around an hour and 20 minutes, which is longer than they'd usually play. And sadly, it showed, as the last 20 minutes or so seemed to drag a bit. An hour would have been perfect, but beyond that it felt they were struggling for material.

I felt a bit deflated as I left. I really thought this would be an absolutely storming show, but the combination of the view and the lengthy set somewhat spoiled it for me.
