Youssou N'Dour
HMV Oxford Street, London – 21st January 1991
Can't remember the actual date of this one, but I could have sworn it was later in the year rather than January. That's what time does to your mind. What I can tell you is that Wayne and I spent a few days in London, during which time we trawled the length of Oxford Street. Twice. I wanted to buy lots of records and CDs. What I remember of Wayne, his mission was to get something to eat every 30 minutes or so!
At some point, we went into one of the massive HMV stores - I think it was the one on Oxford Street rather than on Oxford Circus (whatever, they were pretty much opposite each other anyway). That's where the stage was set up for an in-store appearance by Youssou N'Dour, the Senegalese vocalist who had recently worked with Peter Gabriel.
He and his band were sensational. After their short set, I started making my way around the CD racks. The pile was getting higher and higher before Wayne came over and said "Come on Rob, I'm hungry!" My reply was "But I've only got as far as N..."
